About the NIOCCS output file

Differences between NAICS and SOC equivalencies to Census codes used by NIOCCS

The NAICS and SOC definitions of several Census industry and Census occupation codes are modified in NIOCCS. See the tables below, which detail those changes.

Some Census industry codes do not have a representative NAICS code, and some Census occupation codes do not have a representative SOC code. Where there is no representative code in NAICS or SOC, a code has been created.

With active military Census industry codes, the situation is more complicated. Military branch Census industry codes 9670 through 9870 are defined in NAICS as 928110, National Security. Instead, NIOCCS uses a distinct NAICS code added for each military branch Census industry code, 009670 through 009870, so that NAICS and SOC codes output by NIOCCS are always as detailed or more detailed than their Census equivalents. If strict adherence to NAICS definitions is desired, NAICS codes 009670 through 009870 should be converted to 928110.
