Complete List of Industry and Occupation Code Returned by NIOCCS

NIOCCS codes to:

  • Census Industry and Occupation 2018 codes with several added non-standard codes to address non-paid workers, military and insufficient information,
  • a subset of NAICS 2017 codes along with several added non-standard codes to address non-paid workers, military and insufficient information,
  • a subset of SOC 2018 codes along with several added non-standard codes to address non-paid workers, military and insufficient information.

NIOCCS uses:

  • 273 different Census Industry codes
  • 574 different Census Occupation codes
  • 365 different NAICS codes
  • 808 different SOC codes

NAICS and SOC codes returned by NIOCCS are always as detailed or more detailed than their Census Industry and Occupation code equivalents, except for military branch Census industry codes.

The military branch Census industry codes are more detailed than their equivalent NAICS:

  • Military Census industry codes 9670 through 9870 would normally be associated with NAICS 928110, with strict adherence to NAICS definitions.
  • Instead, military branch Census Industry codes have been associated with unique military branch NAICS codes added to ensure that NIOCCS' NAICS coding of military branches is as detailed as Census Industry coding.
  • If strict adherence to NAICS definitions is desired, NAICS codes 009670 through 009870 should be converted to 928110.

Non-Paid Worker Industry and Occupation Coding

There are six NIOSH-created categories of industry or occupation responses that are not in the work force. These six categories do not map to a standard NAICS or standard SOC code, therefore non-standard NAICS and SOC code are used.
